Just A Waitng Game

When the phrase was coined "Greatest Generation" It was spot on.  My Father In Law is part of that generation, two weeks ago the family was told his time on Earth is near the end. Well he is still here, but once again the Drs have said he won't last the week. So the family is waiting, my oldest, Jordon, in Florida has been told to be ready for a quick trip home. Money is set aside for his airfare. My second oldest son, Andrew, has told us Jordon can sleep at their place if need be.

The last two weeks have been hard on my wife. I have spent much time thinking back to when we would get together up north. Him and I would spend hours talking about everything, and nothing at all. he never talked about his time in the Navy, but I didn't ask either. The kids have been remembering their time with their grand parents when they came back from AZ for the summer.

Looks like the car is going into the shop water pump or thermostat is worn out. Money is not an issue, as its tax refund time. Which also is time to think about what we need vs what we want. Towards the top is more dry goods for storage. Still undecided about water storage, I know we need it, but not sure of place to store. The shed is hot all summer, but still thinking about placing insulation on the inside to keep cooler, I can storage at lest 10 to 20 of the five gallon bottles. I may find other places for storage inside.

Speaking of dry goods. We spent $50.00 today on ad items at the market. 10 cans of veggies for $5, 10 cans of spegitiO's  for $10, 4 jars of Ragu for $.99 each,  4 boxes of Mac n cheese, some all purpose cleaner for $1.00, and another bottle with bleach in it. Same price. When we did our major food shopping for this month, I noticed some prices are up. We buy bulk ground beef in 10 lb tubes, That is up a dollar from last month, only picked up 20 lbs. Picked up 3 tubes ground turkey, no increase in price. 6 package of chicken breast, up to 1,99 from 1.89 a lb.  I noticed that the ground coffee, is now in a slightly small container, from last month. I paid attention to price per ounce. bought a larger can based on price per oz. My low cal, sweeter, no price change. I did look at all the brands on the shelf, and the one I use is the lowest price.

Milk has been a sale for $1.99 a gallon so we have gone through more this week then what we use normally. I keep an eye on the sale items every week. If the price is better locally I spend my money here vs driving to Walmart. I will need to go through all our dry stock better to date it, and toss out the old expired stuff, that is more then a year past due.

Shopko has had two different size generators on sale, one at $199.00 the other is like $250 or so. not sure to buy through them or a place like Menards, (like home depot). Well that's about it. I have read several blogs but did post a reply. This is the most I've typed in a while. I am still tried of the latest version of the D.C.Olympics...I still refuse to watch our local news, and only watch Fox News Channel.

Stay safe, the left and the terrorists are out to get us, and they are not one in the same...

Continuing to pray for your FIL, your wife, you and the family.

Research those generators really good. We have an older Honda generator that we can either run something directly off it or can hook up to the house, was the max load it can handle. Per Mr. H, you can't beat a Honda engine. We still can purchase parts for it. So will you be able to purchase repair parts easily for those big store brands? Another thought is... is it pull start (like a lawnmower) or can turn on with a key? I like the key - I'm sometimes 'challenged' with the pull start. haha But if your wife or daughters need to start they may appreciate the key start, too.

Also, check to see if you have a coca cola plant nearby. Ours sells used syrup barrels/containers that you can store water in, too. Sells them cheap - $5 ea for the 55 gal barrels.

Sounds like you had a successful shopping trip!
God bless & I'm thinking about you all during this time!

What are you eating ? No fresh cooking or what ? Your shopping list sounds a bit disgusting to me. Hope your grandson doesn't eat such junk food.
Regards Linda

Re: your water storage in the shed, consider adding a small ventilation fan, perhaps even one with a thermostat. Being able to exhaust the hot air will do much to keep the water reasonably cool in summer, along with the insulation. And if it's possible have the air intake (for the exhaust system) on the north side of the shed, to keep it out of the sun.

Linda I think you missed something. We have a hot meal every other day. Ribs tonight, with rice, and a veggie. The canned foods are for long term storage. I buy 20 to 30 lbs of ground beef a month, 9 lbs of ground turkey, When I say hot meal that is a full dinner, meat, veggies, potatoes/rice, roll. The other days are left overs, or a sandwich, chips etc. to us a sandwich also includes sloppy joes, tacos, hot dog brats, burgers, fries, chips, fish can be a hot meal or sandwich. We buy fresh fruit, grapes, apples, oranges. Now and then cake, cookies, brownies.

Sorry to hear about your FIL - may he rest in peace and be with the Lord and his loved ones who passed before. My mother will be there in months. She has done well and lived a good life. We are blessed.

Depending on how important a warranty might be to you, here is something we have observed - unless you plan to use it on a regular basis it will be off warranty in a year or less and you will probably have less than 10 hours on it. If there is a power outage in your area or near your area people rush out and buy generators and usually cannot return them to the place of purchase after power is restored. (Retailers learned this the hard way.) Within 3 to 6 months there will be some that come up for sale on local websites or papers and will go for 25 to 50% off. They are basically brand new. Take someone with who can evaluate it (if you can't) and make sure the seller didn't do something stupid and mess it up. Also - (this may sound obvious) READ THE MANUAL. When we bought our last and biggest one (10 days into an 11 day outage) the salesman kept saying "and the best part is that you don't have to change the oil for the first 200 hours"! My other half (a mechanic) didn't believe it. He went to the OEM book and it said to change the oil after the first 50 hours. His comment was - "if we did what the salesman said we most likely would have voided the warranty". So - if anyone can save money or learn something from our experiences - great! If you get an auto start or push button you want to check the battery regularly or keep a trickle charger on it. You also want to run it every month or two - fresh gas makes a difference like with anything.

Again Rob, sorry for your loss....Redder

Redder, Thank you for the kind words. I have learned that some sales people are there for a check. Take Walmart for example. We bought the wife a phone, my wife asked an employee if a $30.00 plan was the right one, she told my wife, yes it was. No it wasn't. Had to return the phone. Went to Best Buy with no issues. Better training at BB. Another thing most folks forget is common sense.

canned foods will keep for years as long as the can is not damaged. I write the purchase date on all of our items and add them to the back of the shelf, older items in the front. Dry goods can be repacked in ziplocks, vacuum-sealed, or glass Mason jars, for long-term storage. We bulk buy flour, rice, sugar, etc from Costco and repackage it. We also shop once a month and stock up on sales. Good for you!
