I stated to post a reply last night to my friend Vicki's blog. The more I typed the more I thought wait this is a blog post of my own.
We are not seeing too much in the way of shortage, as much as the day of the week you shop. We try not to shop Walmart until Tuesday or Wednesday, due to the shopping on Friday afternoon, all day Saturday & Sunday. Our Dollar General only gets their shipments on Wednesday, from their DC. Its like shopping with ads. they come out Thursday for Sunday. Aldi meat sale starts mid week. You also have to take into account now all the online shopping. Walmart has their personnel shoppers getting paid $13 hr or higher. Target now has increased their online shopping.
Not sure if CUB Foods does any, I think Corbons does. Another chain here in MN. For WM you go online pick a pick up time before you order. It can be one or two days before you can get a time slot. We you order online you also can get a limit to amount you buy at a time. The WM folks go down each isle like you would do. So just as soon as you walk in the door, someone has been shopping for an hr or two. But the parking lot is empty?? Yes but Bobby Jo, and Sally have done 6 orders each already.
The great part of online shopping you arrive at the time slot you have chosen, you use an app and say i'm here in parking spot #2 or #5 they bring it out to your car. They load into your car. Oh you had to pay already online.
Another reason for some shortages is, who is not canning right now?? No jars, no lids, no rings, no pressure caners?? I know a family that has a 1,500 sq ft garden plus 4 to 6 raised beds. They are canning every other day.
Just wait until after fall you maybe able to find stuff in every goodwill and thrift shop in each and every town.
Weather is up and down, but every day is one day closer to fall. Any way Stay Safe..Rob

Good article on the way different stores run their sales. The delivery service I use shops at Cub. Their ad comes out Saturday mornings. I am still able to get what I order, but not necessarily the brand I order. Substitutions are becoming more common. The only exception is canning supplies and I haven't been able to get those. I think you are right that more people are canning their own produce now. I am ordering canning supplies online. My son used HyVee's delivery service yesterday and that worked well. Same as Cub, he got what was ordered but with substitutions. I have doubts about the situation getting better any time soon.
From what we've learned at work is the canning shortage is a disruption of supply. We knew at the beginning of the year that we would not get the supplies we normally get to the store. We generally have pallets of them and end up moving a couple pallets worth to the storeroom late season. Now we barely have an aisle's worth. There will be no jars kept over until next season. People are panicking, hording jars and lids. Last year we had trouble getting wide mouth quarts. Now it is on all of them. More people canning is part of the problem but there was a problem way before the season started. I suggest reusable lids to some customers who are in a panic but get shot down that it is a stupid idea. Guess they should have been more prepared before they started.
There is also an aluminum can shortage. The beer guy normally comes in a delivery truck, now he comes in a van. And we don't get all we ordered.
Anything that is produced overseas is affected. We are also starting to see a run on toilet paper, paper towels, canned goods again. The grocery store is still short on lunchmeats, cured meats and frozen vegetables.
Rocky times. Be safe!

Ladies, Thanks for the incite. One thing we all know is that 2020 will always be remembered as a crazy year. The virus, everything closing down, companies filing bankruptcy, hundreds of thousands losing their jobs. On the upside look at how many companies are hiring cause they can't keep up. The metal can shortage i think there is more to it then cheap metal in short supply. I know the cannery here was working with another company to package foods in different kinds of packaging. "foil" pouches, wax paper boxes etc. How many products now days come in a glass jar, besides home canning?? Pickles is the only thing I can think of off the top of my heard. I'm not saying these shortages are real or hyped up. Sad part is the worse is yet to come...Election 2020.
Lots of canning supplies where I live. In face, a sale now on canning jars. Lids and rings plentiful. Depends where you live, I guess.
Well its prime canning time here up nord way. in a month it will be done I'm sure
Live in mid Missouri and I haven't noticed any shortages of product out of the ordinary. Kroger's seems as well stocked as ever and so does Wally World. The only thing I've noticed is that there aren't as many sale items at Wally World or Menards. Our favorite restaurants have an abbreviated menu but it still has all our favorites. Even Miller High Life is abundant.
I'm not sure whats going on. BUT i do know that more people are eating at home. We have around 20 restaurants that have closed, the mom n pop kind
